About St. Michael's

Welcome to St. Michael's Country Day School

Who What When Where
St. Michael’s Country Day is an independent, coeducational, nondenominational school for children from preschool through eighth grade. Founded in 1938, the school’s historic, seven-acre campus is located near the heart of Newport, Rhode Island. St. Michael’s offers a challenging curriculum taught in a caring, respectful environment. It is the mission of the school to educate the whole child—mind, body, spirit, and character.

Why Parents Choose St. Michael's
For the small classes, the dedicated teachers, the individual attention, and the emphasis on helping each child achieve personal success while being an active member of the larger class. Parents choose St. Michael’s for the emphasis we place on values and respect for the identity of others. And for our conviction that when a child receives a St. Michael’s education, great things can indeed happen.

What Our Graduates Say
"Finishing my second week here at Pomfret, I just thought I’d let you [know] how much St. Michael’s has done for me. Already, with people situations, academic areas, and athletics, I feel just so prepared. It occurred to me the other day about how amazing St. Michael’s is... Keep it up, and pass this on to the Middle School students. It's something worth hearing: St. Michael's is an amazing place, Mr. Slade.” — From a recent graduate, in a letter to Head of School Whitney Slade.

Knowledge is Power
We invite you to learn more about St. Michael’s, our teachers, parents and students; the school’s many strengths and how they factor into how we learn, how we create, perform, and play; and how we interact as a community. Spend some time becoming better acquainted with SMCDS, and you will begin to understand what it is you are looking for in a school for your child.
