Field Day 2008

The beach ball goes back in for another year-- Nothing says St. Michael's field day more than this iconic item, which takes a few hours to inflate and which is one of the favorite competitions of the day. Members from each of the two intramural teams (Blue and White) are pitched against each other one on one, as they attempt (with knees, arms, legs, shoulders, and backs) to push, roll and otherwise get the ball to go in the direction of the designated "finish" line of their team.

It was also a day in which the students put their considerate efforts into helping others. On the cue of the student council, this year the jumping-rope segment of the morning was a fundraiser for the American Heart Association, in the same way the students last year raised money for relief in Darfur.

On this busy morning in which the gorgeous weather will no doubt earn it a slot in the history books as one of the most splendid in recent SMS-Day memory, the White team took this year's Rhode Island Avenue Olympiad in a close "St. Michael's tie" of 412 to 387. Congratulations and thanks to Dave Forrest for pulling off a seamless and well-orchestrated Field Day 2008. The 2009 event will be here before we know it.
